These days, it’s hard to find churches with a strong and public commitment to their confessions of faith. To be sure, most if not all churches have a confession—at least in some form—but it’s often relegated to obscurity, unknown and certainly unarticulated by the congregation as a whole.  But for most of its existence, the church has identified itself as a confessional community. Indeed, from the time of its initial formulations of doctrine—the rule of faith, the canon of truth, the early creeds—to its current practice of recitation of confessional formulas, the Christian church has considered this element to be a normative part of being the church.By and large, the straying from confessional Christianity is a negative development in recent church life. In fact, there are several good reasons we should seek to reclaim a robust and distinctly confessional orthodoxy. I’ve listed six of these reasons below.

SHORTLY AFTER CONSTANTINE unified the Roman Empire under his political and military control, he found another problem was threatening to tear the Empire apart: the conflict between the Arian heresy and orthodox Christians. Far from being fought out only among thinkers and elites, the debate was raging even at the level of popular songs being taught in the marketplace.

The conflict arose when Arius taught that there had been a time when Christ did not exist and that he was lower than God the Father. The orthodox camp, on the other hand, considered Christ a member of the Godhead and equal with God the Father.

Understanding Christ Through Creeds

Creeds are helpful in clearing up, or at least helping us understand, some pretty difficult matters. When we think of the divine and human natures of Christ, we can find various ways to misconstrue how those natures relate. This is where the Chalcedonian Formulation can help immensely.

Chalcedonian Creed

Following, then, the holy fathers, we unite in teaching all men to confess the one and only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. This selfsame one is perfect both in deity and in humanness; this selfsame one is also actually God and actually man, with a rational soul {meaning human soul} and a body. He is of the same reality as God as far as his deity is concerned and of the same reality as we ourselves as far as his humanness is concerned; thus like us in all respects, sin only excepted. Before time began he was begotten of the Father, in respect of his deity, and now in these “last days,” for us and behalf of our salvation, this selfsame one was born of Mary the virgin, who is God-bearer in respect of his humanness. We also teach that we apprehend this one and only Christ-Son, Lord, only-begotten — in two natures; and we do this without confusing the two natures, without transmuting one nature into the other, without dividing them into two separate categories, without con- trasting them according to area or function. The distinctiveness of each nature is not nullified by the union. Instead, the “properties” of each nature are conserved and both natures concur in one “person” and in one reality {hypostasis}. They are not divided or cut into two persons, but are together the one and only and only-begotten Word {Logos} of God, the Lord Jesus Christ. Thus have the prophets of old testified; thus the Lord Jesus Christ himself taught us; thus the Symbol of Fathers {the Nicene Creed} has handed down to us.
